Research is HARD

I try to read at least one paper everyday because in order to propose something new, you have to know and understand what is out there. The hard thing about research is the uncertainties such as: how long will this take me to implement?, will this matter to my advisor?, will it be good enough for the community I am targeting?, is someone else going to publish (or have published) similar work? I think the toughest question is the last one. There are some many papers out there, finding true worthwhile novelty is not an easy task. The other tough question is the one about the audience. If I plan on submitting something to the P2P audience, I need to make sure that I've read all the major papers in the area, if I do not, then I could be in trouble. Finally, there is the time issue. Sometimes you do not want to rush a good thing, you want to nurture it until it's ready for the world. It's hard to be patient sometimes because people will assume that you are just being unproductive versus appreciating the nurturing process. As a I get older and wiser, I realized that research is very much like life, it is hard and full of unexpected challenges (but that's what makes it exciting). So to all who reads this, do not underestimate research and the same goes for life.
