The cool stuff I can do with SocialVPN (DAAP music sharing)
SocialVPN tries to make it easy for people to connect their computers in a LAN. Here is an example of one of the many ways I used it. I have a huge collection of music on my home PC. When I'm home, I used rhythmbox to share my music over LAN using DAAP (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Audio_Access_Protocol). So I can listen to my music from my laptop when I'm home. But when I come on campus, I cannot do that because my PC and my laptop are not on the same LAN. But with SocialVPN, I can easily connect my home PC and my laptop and make them look like they are on the same LAN. Now, I can access my HUGGGGGGEEEE music collection and listen to my favorite songs on campus. I also use the gnome-system-monitor to look at the bandwidth usage and it's between 30 KB to 60 KB depending on bit rate of the mp3. Recently I've seen my upload bandwidth max out around 250 KB from Cox, so this means I have plenty of upload bandwidth to stream my music to a few friends (4 to 5 i guess). I've also streamed video from my home using VLC, but as you can imagine, that takes a lot more bandwidth, so I would not recommend it because it can have adverse effects on your home internet speeds. TCP has this behavior when if you clog up your upload bandwidth, you effectively slow down your download bandwidth because when you start dropping ACKs the protocol slows down its sending rate. Anyways, we would be able to do so many cool things if we had more bandwidth. I just got an idea for my next blog post.
