My one week stay at the NSBE Conference
Last week, March 27-April 1, I spent a week in Columbus, OH at the 33rd Annual Convention for the National Society of Black Engineers. First, let me say that it's good to be back home. I like traveling but I like being home more. I am currently the National Communications Chair for NSBE, meaning that I design and maintain the website (www.nsbe.org). It's challenging and time-consuming, but I play an important role in keeping our membership (of 23,000 people) informed of the many happenings of the society. The convention involved many general sessions, presentations, workshops, and career fairs. As a National Board member, I was obligated to attend all general sessions and attend various panels and workshops. I also did some recruiting for the University of Florida with my affiliations with the Graduate Minority Programs. Overall, the convention was great, but I could not stop thinking of all of the work that was piling up during that week. I actually brought my laptop and books in an attempt to not fall behind, but that did not happen. My days usually ended at around 9 pm and by then I was too tired to focus on anything. Also, I did not have internet access in my hotel room. Overall, I realized that the convention is more work than anything else. Now, I'm back and it's catch up time.
